From the Occitan "Abouriou" meaning early, this grape variety takes its name from its ability to ripen quickly. It seems to have been sown naturally. This variety is found "exclusively" in Lot-et-Garonne, its birthplace.

Pairings : braised red meat, game, duck breast, beef, pan-fried marbled ceps, various stews, lamb, tajines, strong cow's cheeses (Epoisses, Pont l'Evêque, etc.).

Tasting notes : the colour is very deep and colourful. The fruity nose is characteristic of this grape variety. The palate is full-bodied and robust, with fresh notes of black fruit (blackberries, black cherries, sloes). The well-balanced tannins give it a lovely tactile feel and good length.

Vinification and vineyard :

Location : the vineyards are located around Marmande on both banks of the Garonne, between Agen and Bordeaux.

Climate : Graduated oceanic, with Mediterranean tendencies, tossed back and forth between Bordeaux influences, which are damp and cool, and Languedoc influences, which are hot and dry, with heavy autumn rainfall.

Soil : 60% clay-limestone (left bank of the Garonne) and 40% boulbènes gravel (right bank of the Garonne).

Vinification and ageing : Abouriou is a tannin-rich grape variety. The aim is to extract the ripe tannins from the skins without extracting the more angular tannins from the pips. To achieve this, pre-fermentation cold maceration takes place, so extraction is gentle and controlled. Alcoholic fermentation then takes place at 25°C. The wine is then matured for ten months, 25% in barrels and 75% in stainless steel vats.

Appellation : The Côtes-du-Marmandais appellation is located in the Lot-et-Garonne department. The vineyards are located around Marmande, between Agen and Bordeaux. One of its distinctive features is the 25% blend of different grape varieties, including Abouriou, which produces fruity, colourful wines. From Jurançon to Cahors, from Gaillac to Bergerac via Marcillac, our producer Lionel Osmin et Cie, a wine merchant who works in partnership with the winegrowers, has become the only cross-disciplinary signature of the wines of the South-West.

Ageing potential : 5 to 8 years

plus minus

100% Abouriou grape variety: originating in the Lot-et-Garonne region, the red grapes of this black variety have a juicy, tangy pulp that is protected by a thick, bluish-black skin. The vinification process produces fresh vanilla notes with a background of blackberries and menthol.
